Notre-Dame de Paris is one of the world's most celebrated cathedrals and an enduring symbol of the French capital. Standing on the Île de la Cité, the historic heart of Paris, this Gothic masterpiece has witnessed over 850 years of French history. From medieval coronations to Victor Hugo's literary inspiration, Notre-Dame has captured the imagination of millions.
The cathedral's construction began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and continued for nearly two centuries. The result is a breathtaking example of French Gothic architecture, featuring soaring vaults, magnificent rose windows, flying buttresses, and countless sculptures that bring biblical stories to life. Notre-Dame pioneered many Gothic innovations that would influence cathedrals across Europe.
On April 15, 2019, a devastating fire broke out in the cathedral's attic, causing the spire to collapse and severely damaging the roof. The world watched in shock as this UNESCO World Heritage Site was threatened. Thanks to the heroic efforts of firefighters, the main structure, towers, and most treasures were saved.
The restoration project, supported by donations from around the world, aims to restore Notre-Dame to its former glory. The cathedral reopened to the public in December 2024, allowing visitors to once again experience this spiritual and architectural treasure. Ongoing work continues on the spire and interior details.
The nave of Notre-Dame stretches 128 meters in length, with vaults soaring 33 meters high. The three magnificent rose windows, dating from the 13th century, are among the finest examples of medieval stained glass. The north rose window alone measures 13 meters in diameter and depicts the Virgin Mary surrounded by figures from the Old Testament.
The Treasury houses precious liturgical objects, including relics and medieval manuscripts. The choir, separated from the nave by an ornate screen, features stunning wood carvings. Outside, the facade presents a rich sculptural program: the Gallery of Kings, the Portal of the Last Judgment, and countless gargoyles and chimeras.
When accessible, climbing the towers of Notre-Dame offers unforgettable views over Paris and the chance to see the famous gargoyles up close. The climb involves 387 steps with no elevator. From the top, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the Seine, Île de la Cité, and landmarks including the Eiffel Tower and Sacré-Cœur. Check current availability as access may be restricted during restoration.
Victor Hugo's 1831 novel "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" brought the cathedral worldwide fame and sparked a preservation movement. Hugo's evocative descriptions highlighted the building's decay and helped inspire major restoration work in the 19th century led by Viollet-le-Duc. The novel continues to draw visitors who imagine Quasimodo among the bells.
Notre-Dame is on the Île de la Cité, easily reached by Metro (Cité or Saint-Michel stations), RER (Saint-Michel Notre-Dame), or on foot from the Latin Quarter or Île Saint-Louis. Batobus stops nearby. The Parvis (square) in front offers excellent photo opportunities.
