The Grand Palais: Paris's Exhibition Palace

Grand Palais facade on Champs-Élysées

The Grand Palais is one of Paris's most recognisable monuments. Built for the 1900 World's Fair, this Beaux-Arts masterpiece features a vast glass-roofed nave, stone facades, and Art Nouveau details. Located between the Champs-Élysées and the Seine, it hosts major art exhibitions, fashion shows, and cultural events throughout the year.

The Grand Palais is actually three separate spaces: the Great Nave (Nef), used for large exhibitions and events; the Palais de la Découverte, a science museum; and the Galeries Nationales, which host blockbuster art exhibitions. Past shows have included retrospectives of Monet, Picasso, Hokusai, and many more. The building is currently undergoing restoration; exhibitions continue in the Grand Palais Éphémère in the Champ de Mars.

Whether you visit for a major retrospective or a contemporary art event, the Grand Palais offers an unforgettable setting. The light-filled nave, the historic architecture, and the quality of the exhibitions make it a must for art lovers. Book your tickets in advance, especially for popular shows, as they often sell out.

History and Architecture

Constructed for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, the Grand Palais was designed by a team of architects including Henri Deglane and Albert Louvet. The structure combined stone, iron, and glass in a bold mix that symbolised modernity. The 200-meter-long nave is crowned by a 45-meter-high glass roof, one of the largest in Europe.
