The Paris Catacombs are one of the city's most unusual attractions. In the late 18th century, the cemeteries of Paris were overcrowded and posed health risks. The authorities decided to transfer the remains to the old stone quarries beneath the city. Between 1786 and the mid-19th century, the bones of millions of Parisians were moved underground and arranged into the dramatic displays you see today.
Visitors descend 20 meters (130 steps) into a cool, humid network of tunnels. The walk covers about 1.5 km and takes around an hour. The bones are arranged in walls and patterns—skulls and femurs form geometric designs, with inscriptions and poetry carved into the stone. The atmosphere is solemn and thought-provoking; the catacombs remind us of the city's layered history and the millions who lived and died in Paris.
Book your tickets well in advance; the catacombs are extremely popular and daily visitor numbers are limited. Skip-the-line tickets are essential in peak season. Wear warm layers (the temperature is a constant 14°C), comfortable shoes, and note that the visit involves many steps. An audio guide greatly enhances the experience with historical context and stories. The catacombs are not recommended for people with mobility issues or claustrophobia.
